👑Why zkSync?
zkSync is an Ethereum scaling solution protocol powered by zkRollup technology developed by Matter Labs.
zkSync was created to solve the gas fee problem of Ethereum while maintaining mainnet security through zkRollup technology. Ethereum's gas fee problem is directly related to scalability. The most important factor in improving the scalability of a mainnet such as Ethereum is the transaction throughput per second and latency, which means the time from transaction request to completion. First of all, in the case of transaction throughput, zkRollup performs better than Optimistic Rollup used by Arbitrum or Optimism because it verifies data through validity proof based on mathematical operation. Next for latency, Optimistic Rollup has a Dispute Time Delay of 7-14 days using fraud proof, whereas zkRollup has no Dispute Time Delay. Therefore, in the case of zkRollup, the period until confirmation is substantially shorter than that of Optimistic Rollup, even though batches cannot be generated frequently due to the high fixed cost for generating validity proofs.
Security is as important as scalability on the mainnet. Optimistic Rollup's Fraud Proof is a structure in which anyone must become a challenger and prove the sequencer wrong through an incentive structure. Therefore, Optimistic Rollup can introduce a security hole because it requires at least one node to behave honestly. On the other hand, the validation proof used by zkRollup is more secure than the Optimistic Rollup because it must prove that the submitted state root is always correct using zero-knowledge proof, which secures security through cryptographic operations.
